FOLLOW THE COYOTE
Night ride through the desert: departure 10pm.
A half-million peso ticket to prosperity.
Fourteen truckback riders try to get some sleep:
Mojados only hoping for a chance to work.
Arrive at work, 4:30. Start to pick the fields.
Come sundown you'll be paid a nickel a bushel.
At night escape in dreams of golden roads del norte.
But the green wall holds you back: no card, no money.
Follow the coyote, he knows the trail today.
His business thrives...
politicians look the other way.
The moon passes, coyote. At daybreak slip away.
Your hunger grows,
tomorrow you will seek some other prey.
Don't fear the INS men, at least not today.
They only deport workers after harvest time.
The circle will continue, see you back next year.
And coyotes feed when summer rolls around.
