DOWN AT THE GROVE

Out on the street, thousands of feet
doing the same old step.
'round and around, all over town,
they haven't arrived there yet.
Stop for a while, it's been a long mile,
Gotta rest for a day.
But don't wait too long,
or you'll find out it's gone.
You'd best be on your way.

Down at the grove they're carrying on,
dancing 'til the break of dawn.
Oblivious to what's going on,
singing that Nilsson song.
How long can this go on?

Now, on down the line, you're passing the time:
dreaming that same old dream.
You're sure that real soon, you'll be in that room,
drowning yourself in champagne.
But year after year, you're still waiting here,
hoping to get your share.
But the man on the street ain't got nothing to eat,
and nobody seems to care.

Now out goes the call, "Over the wall!"
as you near the end of the race.
You've followed your star,
and now here you are:
taking your rightful place.
But out on the street, thousands of feet
echo the old refrain.
the meaning is plain, the rules are the same,
and only the players have changed.
